The rotary engine is back!

The famous rotary engine invented by Wankel has completely disappeared from the radar since the retirement of the Mazda RX-8 in 2012. Well guess what, it’s back, but not in the form you think. Mazda will indeed market its MX-30 equipped with this technology, but only as a range extender.

Compact and lightweight

No sports car with a rotary engine in sight, therefore. the SUV compact of Mazda which will be presented at the Salon de Brussels (January 14-22, 2023) does have a rotary engine, but only to extend range. Concretely, the MX-30 therefore remains a electric vehicle, and the heat engine will supply electricity when the batteries are empty. A smart technical choice, since the rotary engine is both more compact and lighter than a conventional engine.
