OpenAI’s chatbot impresses with the responses it is able to generate. But you can go even further and get clearer and more concise answers by improving your instructions.
Since the end of November and its availability in free public beta, ChatGPT, OpenAI’s conversational robot, has not stopped talking since. And for good reason, the artificial intelligence that drives it is confusing. The tool, which you can address as you would address a loved one, is capable in a few seconds of answering almost all your questions by arguing, as a human being would do.
But if the OpenAI chatbot is so talented, it’s also probably because its creators have showered it with handpicked knowledge. The quality of the tool, and more particularly of the results it offers, is as confusing as it is impressive. The technological revolution generated by the arrival of ChatGPT is colossal, there will be a before and an after…
In a few weeks, ChatGPT conquered the whole world, and many professionals already use the tool daily in their work. It is not the developers who will tell you the opposite, they who have found in the OpenAI chatbot, the ideal ally to carry out thankless tasks, in particular by generating whole sections of code on the fly (of a level sometimes very advanced) to complete their projects under development.
But ChatGPT is just a crawler. A robot endowed with high capacities certainly, but which takes literally what is asked of it. It indeed sticks to the only instructions that you provide to it (the famous “ prompt ») to answer you. And even if most of the time the answers obtained hit the bullseye, they may lack naturalness and precision.
To ensure that you obtain an optimal result, it is sometimes necessary to reiterate the initial request by adding context, giving clarifications, asking him to develop or even rephrase. ChatGPT, which is usually not lacking in inspiration, will then resume its story from the beginning by enriching its answer with the instructions you have provided. These seemingly obvious recommendations will help you get the most out of the tool faster, including if you’ve only just begun to tame it.
1. Add context
This may sound like common sense, but adding context to the instructions given to ChatGPT will get you much more concise answers. When you ask it a question, ChatGPT cuts to the chase and provides the most direct answer. By adding a bit of context to your request, ChatGPT will tailor its response to what you asked.
2. Be precise and concise in your request
This point is somewhat related to the first. In addition to adding context to the instructions you give ChatGPT, you should be as clear and concise in your request as possible. Add as much detail as necessary to your prompt. ChatGPT will take into consideration each of your indications and each of your clarifications to generate a response corresponding in all respects to your request.
3. Ask him to elaborate if you find his answer incomplete
Sometimes the answers generated by ChatGPT lack details. Do not hesitate to continue the conversation with the Chatbot, by asking him directly to develop his previous answer or to complete it. ChatGPT will then continue its tirade by adding new elements to its previous answer.
4. Ask ChatGPT to rephrase its response
If the first answer provided by ChatGPT does not convince you, you can absolutely ask him to rephrase it. You can do this, without needing to modify your prompt initial. All you have to do is ask him, for example, to use simpler terms, avoiding using certain formulations that you consider too complex, or by asking him, for example, to answer as if you were a child. The chatbot will then resume its speech and rework it following your instructions to make it more digestible.
5. Ask ChatGPT to format replies or reply with a specific style
In addition to being an almost inexhaustible source of knowledge, ChatGPT is also able to adapt its speech by adopting a particular style. You can, for example, ask him to respond using the same tone as an author or a celebrity. The Chabot is also able to format the answers by creating, for example, bulleted lists, tables, etc. You can also ask him to respond to you with a specific style, for example by copying the pen of a famous author, or speaking like a celebrity.
