FIFA’s big announcement

A month after the World Cup final, FIFA unveiled the audience figures for the clash between France and Argentina.

For many observers, it is nothing less than the most beautiful World Cup final since the legendary Brazil-Italy of 1970. The meeting was however one-sided for more than an hour. But the sudden awakening of the Blues at the start of the last quarter of an hour and the crazy scenario of the meeting, sublimated by Kylian Mbappé’s hat-trick and Lionel Messi’s two goals, brought the clash between France and Argentina in the legend.

And the match should be remembered all the more as it was followed like never before around the world. According to the figures communicated by FIFA on Wednesday, no less than 1.5 billion viewers watched the final. A record for a football match. By way of comparison, the final between France and Croatia, four years earlier, had been watched by 1.12 billion viewers. The World Cup final, however, is far from the most watched event on television in 2022. Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September would have brought together more than four billion people on television.

Still according to FIFA, the entire Qatari World Cup was massively followed. “Early figures suggest around 5 billion people have engaged with the World Cup, following tournament content on a range of platforms and devices across the media universe”said the international body, revealing that 93.6 million publications had been counted on social networks, for a reach of 262 billion.
