A car crashed into the iconic Brandenburg Gate on Sunday evening, killing its driver in the crash, Berlin police said on Twitter.

Ongoing investigation

An “investigation is underway into the identity of the driver and the circumstances of the incident,” police said.

The daily Picture released a photo of a badly damaged black car and said the area around the gate had been cordoned off.

Located in the heart of the German capital at the border that once divided East and West Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate has become a symbol of German unity.
