Apple Mac Mini M2 test: ever more muscular, ever more versatile

Our review version of the Mac Mini M2 (2023) features the Apple Silicon M2 chip with 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, identical to the one found in the MacBook Pro 13 M2. Our version comes with 16 GB of unified memory and a 1 TB SSD.

It obtains a performance index of 120, or 21% gain compared to the Mac Mini M1 (99). With the arrival of the Mac Mini M2 and M2 Pro, Apple is taking the opportunity to create a range effect up to the Mac Studio and its enormous M1 Ultra.

If you want to compare with an Intel or AMD processor, the Mac Mini M2 offers slightly higher performance than the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U (8C/16T) of the Acer Swift 14 (117) laptop, and slightly lower than the Core i7-1260P (12C/16T) of the Huawei MateBook X 2022. However, the M2 of the Mac Mini is distinguished by its 10 GPU cores which allow it to accelerate creative tasks, unlike Intel/AMD platforms which require a dedicated graphics card.

Good to know for gamersunder Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, the Mac Mini M2 reached 23 fps in Full HD with the Very High preset, while the Mac Mini M1 was content with only 6 fps. So, by reducing the detail slightly, it’s possible to play around with the Mac Mini M2 a bit.

We will not dwell on the performance of the Mac Mini M2 since we have already tested them exhaustively on the MacBook Pro 13 M2.
