a cleric killed and several injured after an attack in a church

A man was arrested after stabbing several people in a church in southern Spain.

A sexton was killed on Tuesday and a priest injured in a stabbing attack at a church in Algeciras, southern Spain, a police source told AFP, adding that a man had been stopped.

This “stabbing attack” took place “shortly before 8:00 p.m.” in the church of San Isidro in Algeciras, in the province of Cadiz, indicated for its part the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, and not in that of San Lorenzo as he had previously indicated by mistake.

One person was killed outside the church and one injured inside the church, the ministry added.

A police source told AFP that the person killed was a sexton while one of the injured was a priest.

According to this source, the assailant was dressed in a djellaba and “screamed something” at the time of the attack.

Local media, based on testimonies, indicate that the assailant was armed with a machete with which he killed the sexton.

“The facts are analyzed and are the subject of an investigation. It is not possible for the moment to determine the nature of the attack”, assured for its part the Ministry of the Interior.
